Walk the Camino de Santiago with Expert Support
The Camino de Santiago, also known as the Way of St James, is one of the world's most iconic pilgrimage routes. In 2025 alone, over 530,000 pilgrims received their Compostela certificate in Santiago de Compostela, a record that reflects the growing appeal of this centuries-old journey. Whether you dream of walking the entire Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, following the rugged Camino del Norte along the northern coast of Spain, or reaching Santiago via the Portuguese Camino, we design each journey around your pace, your level and your wishes.
For many, the Camino is far more than a long-distance walk. It is a journey of personal transformation, a chance to step away from everyday life and reconnect with yourself, with nature and with fellow pilgrims from around the world. Our self-guided packages include luggage transfers, carefully selected accommodation and detailed route notes for every stage of the Camino. Our team at Walks in France has accompanied walkers on these routes since 1988. We know every stage, every village and every place to rest along the way. From your very first enquiry to your arrival at the Plaza del Obradoiro, we are here to make your Camino de Santiago walking holiday as seamless and memorable as possible.
The Way of St James in France : From Le Puy-en-Velay to the Pyrenees
France is home to some of the most beautiful stages of the St James Way. The Via Podiensis, starting from the magnificent cathedral town of Le Puy-en-Velay (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), is the most popular French route to Santiago. Over 750 kilometres, it takes you through the volcanic plateaux of Velay, the wild highlands of Aubrac, the medieval gem of Conques, the sun-drenched vineyards of Quercy and the rolling hills of Gascony, before reaching Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port at the foot of the Pyrenees.
This route is far more than a simple walk. It is a journey through the very heart of rural France. Quiet paths, Romanesque churches, welcoming villages and a remarkable gastronomic heritage await you at every turn. With Walks in France, our self-guided walking holidays along the French Way include all accommodation bookings, daily luggage transfer and a detailed route book, leaving you free to enjoy each day at your own rhythm.

Frequently Asked Questions
A self-guided walking holiday means you walk independently, at your own pace, along a pre-planned route. At Walks in France, we book all your accommodation, transfer your luggage daily and provide you with a detailed route book. You enjoy complete freedom while we handle the logistics.
Not at all. We offer walking holidays for all fitness levels, from gentle week-long itineraries to more challenging long-distance trails. Our team will help you choose the route and daily distances that best match your abilities.
The most popular seasons are spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October), when the weather is pleasant and the trails are less crowded. However, many of our routes are available from March to November. We will advise you on the best period for your chosen destination.
Daily distances typically range from 15 to 25 kilometres, depending on the route and the level of difficulty. We can adjust the stages to suit your pace: shorter days, rest days or longer stages are all possible when you book a tailor-made itinerary.
Absolutely. Whether you are travelling as a family, a group of friends or a walking club, Walks in France organises group walking holidays tailored to your needs. Contact us with your project and we will send you a personalised proposal.
Prices vary depending on the route, the number of days and the level of accommodation. Our self-guided Camino walking holidays typically start from €540 for a short section (6 days) and go up to €1,750+ for longer itineraries. Every package includes accommodation, luggage transfer and a detailed route book. Get in touch for a personalised quote based on your project.
It depends on the route and the section you choose. Some stages are relatively flat and gentle, while others involve mountain crossings and longer distances. The Camino Francés, for example, starts with a challenging climb over the Pyrenees but then eases through the plains of Castile. At Walks in France, we help you select stages that match your fitness level, and we can shorten or adapt any itinerary to make your experience enjoyable and achievable.
The full Camino Francés from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port to Santiago de Compostela covers around 800 kilometres and typically takes 30 to 35 days. However, you do not have to walk the entire route in one go. Many of our clients choose to walk shorter sections over several trips, for example 7 to 14 days at a time. The last 100 kilometres from Sarria to Santiago can be completed in about 5 to 7 days and is the minimum distance required to earn the Compostela certificate.
